ORLANDO, Fla. (March 25, 2024) -- Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association (ORRA) today announces its support for the Hartzog Road attainable housing project, designed to provide much needed attainable housing options for rent-burdened residents in Central Florida.
Affordable housing has a large impact on financial stability and well-being in the local community. The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s 2024 Gap Report shows that there are only 18 affordable and available homes for every 100 extremely low-income renter households in Orlando. This housing community would include roughly 1,400 units, with about 1,000 of them reserved as affordable – for families making 80% or less of the area’s median income.
Walt Disney World allocated 80 acres of its own land for the development of this affordable community.
Disney’s commitment to the Hartzog Road community shows a critical understanding that access to affordable housing enables a greater opportunity for local families to meet health, education, and employment needs.
“The Central Florida community has a dire need for more reliable and affordable housing options. Large employers must step up to the plate and commit to alleviating the affordable housing crisis,” ORRA CEO Cliff Long said. “We are proud to support Disney's effort in creating affordable housing options for our community."
The land allocation for attainable housing is intended for hardworking residents priced out of the housing market. This project will provide much-needed diversification of housing stock in Orange County.
Diversifying the Central Florida housing supply
Diversifying the Central Florida housing supply is important to increase the region's socioeconomic mobility. This housing project will create a unique opportunity for the region to serve as a model for other communities nationwide facing affordable housing challenges.
A vote on the Hartzog Road attainable housing project is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26. Ahead of the vote, ORRA encourages residents to contact county commissioners to have their voices heard.
The Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association, recognized as one of the most innovative local real estate associations in the country, represents more than 20,000 real estate professionals throughout Central Florida.
