Dear Patty,

I am a new property manager and am unsure of where to begin and what resources are available for me. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Dear Rookie,

There is a wealth of resources available to you whether you’re new to the business or are always up for learning new things to make your business better.

I would definitely recommend becoming active in your local board and some of the numerous trade organizations that serve property managers, such as the National Association of Residential Property Managers, Women’s Council of REALTORS®, or Florida Association of Residential Property Managers. In addition to offering valuable learning opportunities, these organizations offer abundant networking opportunities to grow your business. You will also often find many have directories with affiliate member information, which can prove to be a help to find vendors.

Take advantage of ORRA’s many, many educational classes. There are numerous certification classes as well as informative sessions which can prove invaluable.

For legal resources, websites such as www.evict .com offer free forms that you may find useful. Many of these sites also provide routine legal updates via e-mail so you can be assured that you’re kept aware of any new laws effecting the business. Also, the Florida REALTORS® legal hotline can help with more specific questions.

Finally, chamber organizations and the Business Referral Organization are excellent sources for referrals and networking.

Good luck,
