What community service activity
do you perform?
Orlando REALTOR® | JulyAugust 2017
REALTORS® dont just sell houses, they create communities! ORRA members share their volunteer efforts to improve the lives of people, pets, and plants
My community service efforts have benefited my real estate business tremendously. I am involved in my HOA and since joining, I have interacted and formed relationships with my neighbors. Helping my community has opened many doors to my real estate business given that I am able to demonstrate how dedicated and committed I am toward a cause.
-Jessie Sangil, Lovera Realty
I am a volunteer at Jones High School in Orlando. I serve as the head football coach for the freshman and junior varsity football teams. We spend three to four hours a day, four to five days a week, preparing for a game during the season. During the off season, I spend my time teaching the students how to work out safely, how choose the right foods to eat, and how to study properly.
-Keith James Bertrand, Southern Home Title
Because of my love for animals, I recently decided to help at the local animal shelter. I go a couple of times a month to walk the dogs that have been caged all night. It’s easy to fall in love with them, but it’s great when I go back the next time and learn that they have found a forever home.
-Sheila Beasley, Metro Realty Group
I serve as a volunteer partner/mentor as USA Dance, an organization that provides ballroom-dance classes for individuals with special needs, Alzheimer’s patients, disadvantaged youths, and veterans. I also dance in outreach performances at schools, churches, festivals, domestic-abuse shelters, and charity fundraisers.
-Gisela Smith, Charles Rutenburg Realty
I’m the president of the Orlando Museum of Art Associates, a volunteer support group committed to expanding the museum’s membership and encouraging the appreciation of the visual arts. To date I’ve logged more than 1,000 hours! I also volunteer at A Gift For Teaching and average seven hours a month driving a box truck to pick up and make deliveries.
-Ed Herbst, Keller Williams Classic Realty
I serve as CEO of Florida Community Outreach and as a committee member of the Orange County Drug Free Coalition. The coalition collaborates with community partners, law enforcement, schools, higher education, faith-based organizations, parents, and community members to develop and implement a strategic action plan to reduce alcohol and other drug use.
-Donna Morton, Florida Summer Homes Realty
I have volunteered with the Orlando Police Department for the past 14 years, both on patrol and covering local events. It’s given me the opportunity to get to know our city and its residents from a unique perspective. It’s also instilled a deep appreciation for the work done by our law enforcement officers on a daily basis, and for the many challenges they face.
-Sofia Lugo, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty
I put my attorney skills to work by serving as a teen court judge or jury advisor once a month with the Orange County Teen Court program. The program is for juveniles who have been arrested, and completion of the program results in having their charges dropped. I’ve been involved for six years and it truly grounds me to help these children.
-Michael Brown, Title Consulting Services, LLC
Besides being a big volunteer to Wounded Warriors, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and other charities, my biggest event is our annual Making of Sandwiches for the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, which we do every holiday season. It is one of the most popular events I help host, and last year we set a record of 1,000 sandwiches.
-Suzi Karr, Premier Sotheby’s Int’l Realty
As a member of the youth-oriented Oviedo/Winter Springs Optimist Club since the 1990s, I have served on the board of directors in various capacities over the years. My main focus is the annual Optimist International Essay Contest. This year, our club winner went on to win at the district level and won a $2,500 scholarship!
-Jean White, Commercial Homes and Land, Inc.
About three months ago I started to participate more in volunteering with causes that are dear to my heart. I needed to take some stress out of my life, and four-legged bark buddies have always been a huge soft spot. Now I am doing what I can to help all these wonderful pups find their forever home. I help both wolves (at In Harmony With Nature) and domestic canines (at Pet Alliance and In Harmony With Nature).
-Robert Lynch, RE/MAX Showcase
Once a month we feed the homeless in the Sanford area at the Sanford Civic Center. It's a wonderful experience to share with them what God has given us. We are blessed in so many ways and we want to give others the blessings of God.
-Roberto Llavina, Continental Invt Int’l Network
Each year we volunteer to raise money for the Bahia Shriner's Transportation Fund, which provide free transportation to the Shriner's hospital for children and their families. We reach out to businesses, colleagues, and clients for donations, and several donors match our total contribution for the year. We try to generate a heart for giving to others.
-Maddie Kisha and Deb Engle, PR Real Estate Services
Ten years ago, the Osceola County School District counted 129 homeless children among its student population. Today the count stands at more than 3,000. The Grimes Group has collaborated with the United Efforts to Make a Difference in Osceola County organization. Last year we donated more than 35 pairs of pajamas. Each year we expected to double and triple that number.
-Karlene Grimes, Keller Williams Advantage III
I help raise money for student scholarships with the Woman's Club at the University of Central Florida. I also support Frontier Civitan Club, which focuses on hands-on projects and fundraisers that benefit Central Florida children of all ages. From mentoring at-risk kids to coming alongside and helping existing organizations, I go where the need arises to better the life of a child.
-Roberta Shoopman, Charles Rutenberg Rlty Orlando
I am a hospice volunteer and enjoy assisting fearless caregivers. Caregivers receive comfort, conversations, prayers, encouragement, companionship and more when they accept the hospice volunteers into their homes. Hospice volunteers are a team-oriented group that gives emotional, social and spiritual comfort to the caregivers.
-Terri Underwood, Home Wise Realty Group, Inc.
I help a bilingual kindergarten teacher with a program with bilingual students. I enjoy doing this with the small kids. I think it is a way to return something to the community.
-Olga Chaves, Weichert Realtors Hallmark Properties
I am a member of the Board of Trustees of the North/Central Florida Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and an active participant in the Team in Training program for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I’ve personally raised more than $30,0000; have received various philanthropic awards (including the Jefferson Award); and serve as a CB CARES Foundation representative.
-John Scolaro, Coldwell Banker Residential RE
I enjoy being a member of the largest child advocacy group in the United States: PTA and PTSAs. I serve as the secretary for Seminole County Council of PTAs and PTSAs. We provide support, training, and legislative updates to the 59 local school PTAs and PTSAs in Seminole County. The PTA motto is: Every child-one voice.
-Natalie Amento, Florida Realty Investments
I opened my brokerage almost a year ago, and to say community service is a part of our business is a huge understatement because community service is our business. Upon opening the brokerage, I also opened a nonprofit called The HAUS Project. Our mission to support the community and its business owners.
-Hollie Gondera, Haus Real Estate
As a survivor of child abuse, I become an attorney. In 2006 I founded Fundacion Baila Corazon here in Florida. This nonprofit organization supports at-risk children and youth children, plus survivors of violence by strengthening their self esteem through the art programs. We also help women achieve self-sufficiency through education, job assistance, and housing. For that, I become a REALTOR®.
-Vionette Pietri, Empire Network Realty
For the past five years we've been privileged to volunteer at Catalina Elementary, where we serve on the PTA and lead an after-school program (Kid's Beach Club) Wednesdays. Serving helps us and personally improves our character and our outlook on life. There are no financial benefits to our real estate business via our commitment as OCPS Additions volunteers.
-Sidney and Kim Galloway, RE/MAX 200 Realty
Our mission at Helping Brevard’s Children is to provide encouragement and support to all children. Through showing that others care for them, their growth, and their needs, the children we assist see a brighter future. Our first two "Free Children's Book Fair" events reached more than 130 kids. They were allowed to pick out books to take home and to celebrate with ice cream. We are excited to continue!
-Linda Streetman, Preferred Real Estate Brokers
I was recently invited to raise monies and to be a part of the National Women's Build for West Orange Habitat for Humanity May 13th. We raised monies for two single mothers to have homes! We had more 50 women at a build event on Mother's Day weekend.
-Janet Scott, Premier Sotheby's Int’l Realty
We try to do one community service event per quarter. For this quarter, we sponsored the Dividends Luncheon for Seminole County Public Schools and provided a check for $ 10,000 to the Families in Need program. We also spent a day with Harvest Time as part of Keller Williams’ annual Red Day community service day event. In the first quarter, we painted a house for Habitat for Humanity.
-David and Anne-Marie Miller, Keller Williams Heritage Realty
Our office volunteers hundreds of hours to help out with Easter Seals’ Your Skills of Florida. It's more of a volunteer/fundraising effort. Over the past several years we've raised over $500,000 to go to the charity and it keeps growing. That is done by volunteering services for our acoustic set at a concert series in their Walk With Me event.
-David Dorman, Century 21 Professional Group Inc
As an ambassador on the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce, I assisted with the Bicycle Festival in 2015. The 2017 festival is coming up in October, and it’s an event not to be missed. Also, I have trained my German shepherd (Heidi) and Maltese, Abehs, as certified therapy dogs with PAWS. We visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and attend events.
-Pat Crane, Real Living Good Neighbor Rlty
I own a supplement company and give products away to senior citizens for free. Many senior citizens are on fixed incomes and cannot afford my products.
-Steve Kropp, Kropp Real Estate Advisory Inc
I have helped fundraise for many causes, such as for a shaded structure at Sunset Park Elementary School and an improved soccer field at Bridgewater Middle School. Right now I'm fundraising for Windermere High School's Wolverine Legacy Fund. Giving back to your community is a life lesson that I have taught to my children, and one day they will show their own how to pass it on.
-Jane Dunkelberger, BHHS Florida Realty
I am a founding (1986) member of the Heathrow Women’s Club, and served as its president in 1989. I have held numerous additional volunteer positions, and am a regular contributor to the organization’s fundraisers. The organization’s charitable arm, Heathrow Women's Club Charities, Inc., has contributed well over $1 million to local children’s and women’s charities.
-Carolyn Taylor, Carolyn Taylor
We provide food, clothes, haircuts, and toiletries right on the street at Lake Eola Downtown for 200 homeless every Monday at 2:30 p.m. We even go into the camps as well.
-Curtis Hersey, Move Rite
I volunteer at ORRA on the Global Real Estate Council of Orlando; in this volunteer position I have been able to network with a great number of agents and suppliers that I have ended up working with to finalize several deals. I have also been able to assist my clients better by providing them other professionals to help them in getting established here. I also volunteer for the girls counts.
-Marilia Neri, Keller Williams Winter Park
