The FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has provided these before and after steps for you and your clients.

Before a flood, take proper precautions for yourself and your home. Here are a few steps from NFIP:

  • Get flood insurance.
  • Know your flood risk.
  • Take a household inventory.
  • Store important documents.

After a flood, it can be very overwhelming and you can be unsure of where to start. NFIP recommends insurance policyholders to always document the flooding first and then begin removing damaged items. Follow these steps from NFIP:

  • Take photos and videos.
  • Record serial numbers.
  • Keep receipts.
  • Retail all material samples.
  • Contact repair services.
