Receives and reviews ethics complaints and arbitration requests to determine in the case of ethics complaints, if taken as true on their face, a hearing is warranted or in the case of arbitration requests if the matter is arbitrable under the guidelines set forth in the NAR Professional Standards manual. All prospective Grievance Committee members shall submit an application for the upcoming year.
Composed of at least eight (8) REALTOR® members appointed by the president in collaboration with committee leadership and confirmed by the Board of Directors.
A volunteer leader and/or member must be a REALTOR® for three years and serve one-year terms. However, to ensure continuity while still providing future opportunities for others to serve, some members and leaders may be reappointed to successive terms at the pleasure of that program year’s Chairman of the Board.
To maintain a balance of experienced and new members, membership appointments to the Grievance Committee shall strive to maintain the following target ratios: 20-35% - first year appointments; 20-35% - second year appointments; 20-35% - third year appointments; and 20-35% one or more years experience on grievance (includes members with prior professional standards experience).
Members may be reappointed to the committee after one year’s absence. Committee appointments are made annually and all appointments shall be subject to removal in circumstances of a member’s non-participation or non-judicial behavior.
Usually meets as a full committee for annual required training. Monthly meetings are held to screen ethics and arbitration complaint requests for forwarding to Professional Standards hearings. Additional training and update meetings can be called by committee leadership as needs dictate.
