From the March/April 2012 issue
By Stephen Baker
ORRA Chairman of the Board
The business of our association and that of our members has gotten off to a great start in 2012! Although the sales stats backed off just a bit for the month of January (which is typical), new contracts, pending sales, and new listings were all on the rise. In addition, most of the members I am speaking to are energetic and optimistic about the way 2012 has gotten started.
At your association, the energy is much the same. All of the committees have met at least once, and many committees already have activities and events scheduled and/or underway. The ORRA Professional Development Forum and its three subcommittees have already scheduled more than 278 classes on the ORRA 2012 Education Calendar. The ORRA Governmental Affairs Committee is busy screening and getting ready to announce its recommended political candidates for several races.
In January, many of your fellow members, including your Leadership Team, participated in the Florida REALTORS® Mid-Winter Conference in Orlando. There were some great classes available to all, including sessions on technology, marketing, and, of course, short sales and REOs. Many of our members also serve on governance committees for Florida REALTORS®, and ORRA has 28 Florida REALTORS® directors. All 28 of them were in attendance at the first Florida REALTORS® Board of Directors meeting of 2012!
And finally, Great American REALTOR® Days was a great success. More than 50 ORRA members travelled to Tallahassee and met with various state representatives in their Capitol offices to discuss several bills that Florida REALTORS® is supporting this legislative session. The local business tax (aka occupational license), the new septic tank bill, modifications to Citizen Insurance, and the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund are just a few issues of interest to REALTORS®. We made a strong showing to all our representatives, including Gov. Rick Scott. The governor dropped in on the Florida REALTORS® Public Policy Committee Meeting and addressed a standing-room only crowd of enthusiastic REALTORS®.
All in all, there is a lot happening with your association. Again, I encourage you to take advantage of the many classes, networking opportunities, political activism, and community involvement outlets that ORRA has to offer.
