Opening Doors, Walking In
For new ORRA President John Lazenby, 2016 is the "Year of the Member." To be thinking of others is hardly a surprise, coming from a REALTOR® with a history dominated by community involvement and service.
“Leading an association, just like volunteering with a civic organization, is about taking positive action on behalf of someone else,” says Lazenby. “This year, every program we initiate and every project we refine will be asked to meet a basic criteria - it should directly benefit or otherwise provide an opportunity for the ORRA member.”
The doors of opportunity around ORRA have already started opening. For example, ORRA members can take advantage of another year of free and reduced-cost continuing education classes (including some that lead to a certification or designation, including Gold Key, ABR and CIPS), reduced dues for those with 30 or more years of REALTOR® membership at ORRA, and special recognition for those ORRA members who have served in the armed forces.
Lazenby has plenty of experience in opening doors, in particular as a mentor to at-risk students through the Florida Citrus Sports Association’s Take Stock in Children program. In fact, his dedication and involvement earned him the 2009 Florida Citrus Sports Volunteer of the Year Award. John is on the FCS Board of Directors and served as a FCS bowl game team host for nine years.
John’s civic efforts earned him ORRA’s own Pillar of the Community award in 2009. He is a longtime volunteer within both ORRA - including stints as Chairman of the ORRA Grievance Committee and as a member of the forward-thinking ORRA Strategic Planning Committee — and Florida REALTORS®. Even John’s volunteer activities with his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, have earned him a spot at the top of the class - in 2009 John was inducted into the USM Alumni Hall of Fame.
Now, as ORRA’s 2016 president, John will be focusing his attention on opening doors for Orlando REALTORS®. ORRA members need only open their minds and walk in.
