Greetings from the bus! I’m writing my message for this issue of Orlando REALTOR® magazine as we are headed back to Orlando from Tallahassee and Great American REALTOR® Days. This event is always one of my favorites, and not just because I am a past chairman of both GARD and the ORRA REALTOR® Political Action Committee (ok, so maybe that does have something to do with it).
GARD is one of my favorite events because it exemplifies a primary purpose of ORRA and the REALTOR® organization as a whole: to serve as the voice of REALTORS® and real estate. This statewide tradition brings together state legislators and local REALTORS® for the purpose of sharing the REALTOR® position on real estate issues. It’s also an opportunity to remind legislators, and ourselves, that the REALTOR® lobby is one of the largest in both Florida and the U.S.
We had lots to talk about during our legislator visits this year, such as the importance of using funds in the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund as they are intended (for affordable housing programs, of course). We also talked about the need for legislation regarding homeowner association estoppel letters, which I am proud to say that ORRA had a big part in.
Back in January, the ORRA HOA Task Force provided Florida REALTORS® with a series of recommendations for altering the Florida Statutes that govern estoppel letters. Florida REALTORS® reviewed ORRA’s recommendations during its annual mid-winter meetings, and the recommendations eventually were incorporated into Florida REALTORS® legislative priorities for 2015!
The task force, chaired by Cindy Egeli, Elite Real Estate Professionals, recommended the following:
*Cap fees charged to title companies for an estoppel letter to no more than $250;
*Reduce the turnaround time to either 10 calendar days or five business days; and
*Require information provided in an estoppel letter to be valid for no less than 30 days.
Big kudos to the Cindy and the rest of the task force!!
