Orlando REALTOR® | July/August 2014
By Zola Szerencses
I've been a REALTOR® for quite a while. And I’ve been involved with ORRA for a long time. But I can say that one of my proudest moments as a REALTOR® and as an ORRA leader was during the announcement of the first-ever ORRA Good Neighbor Awards last month.
This brand new program honors REALTORS® whose volunteerism makes a difference in our community. It’s modeled after NAR’s program and was a project of the ORRA Community Relations Committee, graciously chaired this year by Tansey Soderstrom.
I’ve always believed that REALTORS® don’t just help people buy houses, they also help build communities. The seven ORRA Good Neighbor Award finalists demonstrate but a tiny sampling of the amazing works of community service performed by our members. I thank each and every one of you for the time and effort you put into making our communities a better place to live.
There are more ORRA community service projects in the works, and you can get involved in these as well. For starters, ORRA will be partnering with Junior Achievement to recruit 400 (yes, you read that correctly) REALTORS® who will give presentations at area schools about financial literacy and the financial aspects of buying and selling a home. Stay tuned to ORRA’s website and social media, the Orlando REALTOR® Online e-mail newsletter, and of course Orlando REALTOR® magazine for more details.
Later in the fall, ORRA will again be stepping out for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. Last year we had more than 100 REALTORS® walking in blue shirts for Team ORRA, and we raised more than $10,000. My goal is to double both of those tallies! Again, stay tuned for more details.
Of course you’re always welcome to contribute to ORRA’s ongoing community service project, A Gift For Teaching. As REALTORS®, we know the importance of good schools. A Gift For Teaching makes the job a little easier for teachers (who often reach into their own pockets) by providing donated materials and resources for their students in need. While we always encourage anyone who comes to an ORRA event or class to bring extra school supplies for a Gift For Teaching, I’d like to point out the need ratchets up at the beginning of the new school year. There are special donation bins located in near both entrances to the ORRA Conference Center, so if you’re coming by… (hint, hint).
To all our good REALTOR® neighbors, whether heralded or unsung, I offer you a tip of the ORRA hat.
