Orlando REALTOR® | May/June 2014
By Zola Szerencses
REM… Duran Duran… Madonna… The Cure… Poison… Flock of Seagulls… Bruce Springsteen…
How about taking ride down memory lane in your Pink Cadillac at ORRA’s RPAC fundraising event? There’ll be great 80s music plus terrific auction items, and if that isn’t enough, there’ll also be live performances by your favorite Orlando REALTORS® singing their own favorite 80s songs for a shot at $1,000.
The event will be held on June 26 in the ballroom of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Maitland. Learn more and register by visiting the ORRA website, then reach way back into your closet because 80s attire is encouraged!
Money raised at the event will benefit the REALTOR® Political Action Committee (RPAC), which I’m sure leave many to wonder, “Why do we as REALTORS® want to be involved in politics?” The simple answer is that we are involved in order to strengthen the ability of Americans to own, buy, and sell real property.
Just to name some of the advocacy issues that affect REALTORS®, homebuyers, and property owners:, there are:
- commercial finance;
- fair housing;
- federal tax;
- financial and credit;
- technology; and, of course
- real estate transaction issues.
In addition, some of you heard the phrase, “Please support RPAC!”
What is RPAC? Since 1969, the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) has promoted the election of pro-REALTOR® candidates across the United States. The purpose of RPAC is clear: for REALTORS® to raise and spend money to elect candidates who understand and support their interests.
The money to accomplish this purpose comes from voluntary contributions. These contributions are not members’ dues; rather, this is money given freely by REALTORS® in recognition of how important campaign fundraising is to the political process.
RPAC doesn’t buy votes. RPAC enables REALTORS® to support candidates that support the issues that are important to their profession and livelihood.
Overseeing RPAC’s many activities is a big job, so we owe a debt of gratitude to the chair of the ORRA RPAC Subcommittee for 2014, Dan Lopez of Legends Realty.
