Fun and games are serious
when your teammates don't have
a home field advantage

An afternoon with the kids playing flag football doesn’t much sound like community service, but that changes a bit when you consider those kids are temporary residents of the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida.

REALTOR® Alicia Taylor, Watson Realty Corp., considers the time she spends horsing around with the coalition’s youths to be paying it forward – done out of gratitude for the support shown to her while growing up. "It gives me great joy to demonstrate to these children that there are people who care about them, and to provide a few hours of the childhood fun and attention that can be hard to come by when you’re living in stressful conditions,” says Taylor. "It’s very rewarding to offer something that I would hope to have if I were in a similar situation.”

Taylor (a Washington Redskins fan and an RGIII believer) says she spends about 10 hours a month chaperoning field trips and helping out wherever she’s needed, in addition to working the gridiron shift. And, she knows that her efforts are appreciated. "Because families are only allowed to stay at the coalition for a few months I see a lot of kids come and go, and I touch their lives in just the briefest of manners. But they always remember me after our first meeting, and will run up for hugs on my next visit.”

Taylor is quick to point out that her volunteer efforts are unlikely to result in the client referrals or networking opportunities that many REALTORS® discover as secondary benefits to volunteerism. "It’s strictly personal for me,” she says with a smile. "There’s nothing better than doing something for someone in need.”
