Kick these little browsing trackers
out of your computer in order
to protect your online privacy

Cookies are usually considered tiny tidbits of deliciousness, but web cookies can be big troublemakers.

Web cookies are small text files placed on your computer by some websites to store information about you and your preferences. Cookies save certain useful information (such as account names and passwords) for later retrieval, which can make your web browsing experience convenient and quick.

In the wrong hands, however, cookies can be a threat to your online privacy, so browsers make cookies easy to store and to even delete entirely. Here’s how you can perform the latter task in some of the most popular browsers.

Internet Explorer

IE 10 and IE 9

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click the button that resembles a gear in the top right corner, point to Safety, and then click Delete Browsing History.
  • Select the Cookies only check box, and click Delete.

IE 8

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click the Safety button, and click Delete Browsing History.
  • Select the Cookies check box.
  • Select the Preserve Favorite Website Data check box if you don’t want to delete the cookies associated with websites in your Favorites list.
  • Click Delete.

Firefox

  • Open Firefox.
  • Click the Firefox button, hover over the History menu, and select Clear Recent History.
  • Set Time Range to Clear to Everything.
  • Click on the arrow next to Details to expand the list of history items.
  • Select Cookies and make sure other items you want to keep are not selected.
  • Click Clear Now.

Chrome

  • Open Chrome.
  • Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  • Select Tools.
  • Select Clear Browsing Data.
  • In the dialog that appears, select the checkboxes to delete cookies and other site plug-in data.
  • Click Clear Browsing Data.

Safari

  • Open Safari.
  • Choose Safari > Preferences, and then click Privacy.
  • Click Details.
  • Select one or more websites that stores cookies, and then click Remove or Remove All.
  • When you finish removing websites, click Done.

Congratulations, you've successfully emptied your cookie jar!
